Puppy Check-Up

If you’re bringing a new puppy home, you can look forward to having a loving companion. However, it’s also important to set up a puppy check-up. Since puppies are risk for certain illness and parasitic infections, check-ups can help ensure your pet receives the care he or she needs. At Caring Hands Veterinary Clinic in Philadelphia, PA, we offer vaccinations, spaying and neutering, and wellness exams to improve your puppy’s overall health.

Physical Exam

During this exam, our veterinarian will check your puppy for signs of health issues or concerns. We will also examine its breathing, heart rate, eyes, and ears to ensure it is growing and developing properly. If you have any questions about caring for your puppy, you can ask us during this visit. We can also recommend which foods to feed your pet for healthy development. In addition, we can discuss any behavioral concerns you may have with you and offer advice on how to train your puppy.

Vaccinations

Puppies need vaccinations to keep them safe from diseases like rabies, parvovirus, and distemper. When your puppy is old enough, you can bring him or her in for their vaccinations and booster shots. Puppies generally need to be between six and eight weeks old before they can receive vaccines. Our vet will administer core vaccines, such as rabies, DHP, or DAP, which protects against distemper, canine hepatitis, adenovirus, and parvovirus. We can also recommend non-core vaccines for your puppy that may be necessary.

Spay and Neuter

Spaying and neutering pets can help reduce pet overpopulation. Along with that, the surgeries can prevent your puppy from contracting certain diseases like mammary or ovarian cancer or testicular cancer. Pets that are spayed and neutered also have a longer life expectancy than those who are not.

Disease Testing

At our clinic, we run tests to check for health conditions that your puppy might have. Detecting any conditions early allows us to provide care right away if needed. We do bloodwork to look for illnesses or diseases, as well as fecal tests and a urinalysis. Not only that, but our vet also performs heartworm tests to check for infections and offer prompt treatment.
